Driving through characterful Cumbrian villages, the road slowly got more and more twisty and we could see why this route is a motor bikers dream! A mountain bikers dream too for that matter as the Coast to Coast cycle route also makes it's way over these fells to Alston. As the clouds rolled in, we spotted our destination at the fell top - The Hartside Top Cafe. Getting whipped by the wind we hurried into the warmth of this comfortable, homely cafe. Food is freshly made and just what you might expect to have served up sat at Grandma's Farmhouse kitchen table. Homemade cakes are made with love and in generous proportions and the same can be said of their breakfast and lunch menu too. We sat and relaxed, sheltered behind the glass, looking out across breathtaking views over these Cumbrian Fells and watched as the weather rolled in. Our attention was soon turned though to what can only be described as the best full english breakfast we've ever had! More of a tribute to the Cumberland Sausage in fact! A perfect hearty belly-filling warmer on a blustery day... not to be missed!
